Background: South Africa participation in the Tribeca Film Festival 2012
A meeting was held between the SA Consulate General in New York and the Cape Film Commission CEO, Mr. Denis Lille in November 2011 to discuss the support of SA Filmmakers’ participation at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2012. The possibility of participation of SA Filmmakers was then confirmed on Monday 13th February, on the same day CFC consulted the DTI who advised on the submission deadline of the 20th February. The wording of the notice and agreements were not in place until Wednesday evening the 15th of February, hence late notification.
A call for entries was sent out by GFC on the 16th February 2012 and the GFC apologises for any inconvenience caused by short deadlines noted in the previous communication.
The purpose of the mission is to expose South African filmmakers to the Tribeca Film Festival with a view to forge partnerships with US filmmakers and producers participating in the festival.
The GFC saw this mission as a big opportunity that will provide Gauteng and South African filmmakers a platform to showcase their projects and talent in April and in future events organized by the Tribeca Film Festival and other similar organizations in the US.
The South African delegation will participate on the sideline events organized by the Tribeca Film Festival. In this regard, the South African Consulate General will arrange a series of meetings for the SA filmmakers to engage and interact with their counterparts in the US film industry.
In its effort to ease and ensure that Gauteng filmmakers are able to participate in this very important initiative, the Gauteng Film Commission has extended the deadline and the submission venue to Gauteng Film Commission offices and not Cape Town as previously stated.
The new submission deadline is 12h00, Monday the 20th of February 2012, and delivery can be made at the GFC offices at 124 Main Street, Johannesburg, 2001. Telephone number 011 085 2200.
Filmmakers wishing to participate in the venture should send a letter of motivation to the GFC describing reasons for inclusion in the programme. The application should include the documents listed below under DTI requirements; and should be hand delivered to the GFC no later than 12H00 on the 20th February 2012. No latecomers and filmmakers not matching the criteria will be considered.

- Complete project proposals including budgets, timelines and job opportunities
- Project synopsis
- Company profile
- Biography or CV or person representing the company/travelling
- Project Aims, Objective and Outcomes
- Proposed aims, objective and outcomes for attending the festival & market
- Export Marketing plan
- Brochure /Showreel (complete with high res images)
- Customs and Excise Certificate if exporting materials
- Original Tax Clearance Certificate
- Last financial year’s Audit Financial Statement or 3 months bank statement on a bank letterhead certified
- Confirmation of bank details – original letter from bank verifying the bank details
- Original certified copy of passport
Applicants must be in possession of:
- Valid Passport
- Finance to pay for a valid visa
- Finance to pay for travel insurance

Your application must be enclosed in an envelope addressed to Desmond Mthembu & Siyabonga Mngoma, and should contain the name of the company and the name of the festival.

The GFC in its endeavor to support Gauteng filmmakers would like to encourage those filmmakers who can still meet the tight deadline to submit their projects. We hope that this experience will guide the GFC in future film trade initiatives.
In future the coordination of such processes will be addressed timeously by engaging all stakeholders. Discussions between GFC and DTI will be held to outline possible film festivals and markets which we can collaborate.
