Word from the Chief Executive
We are a week away from our second annual Film Indaba and look forward to a jam-packed programme and the opportunity to interact with our friends and colleagues in the industry. Remember to register as seats are filling fast and we believe we’ve compiled a programme that will be worth your attendance.
November is also the month in which Gauteng province launches its new brand identity. With the tagline ‘It Starts Here’, the new Gauteng brand seeks to build a unifying brand across the sectors and regions of South Africa’s most powerful and dynamic province. While the GFC will continue to brand the province in line with its ‘Big Ideas. Perfect Locations’ campaign, we will be working closely with other provincial departments and agencies to align the provincial film brand with the new umbrella brand of the province.
The issue of piracy and copyright theft is one that unfortunately is always with us – but strides are being made, thanks to initiatives by the Southern African Federation Against Copyright Theft (SAFACT), working with SAPS, SARS, Customs, DTI and Prosecution staff. We bring you an update on recent activities in this field and urge you to support SAFACT.
On the locations front, we update you on new Gauteng hotels that are not only stylish and funky accommodation options for those A-list stars but are also welcoming to film shoots.
In our production update of the month Picture Tree talks to us about a recent international commercial shot in Johannesburg (proving that yes, we do have beaches in Gauteng!) while AFDA students experience how Ekurhuleni is a hidden gem when it comes to filming.
As you know, developing the local industry is a key objective of the GFC and this month we update you on some of the activities that our Industry Support Development team are involved in.
Lastly, a word of welcome to Seitiso Mogoshane who has joined the GFC as Information Officer. Seitiso will be assisting with film permits and location enquiries. See you at the Film Indaba!

11th Encounters SA Intl Documentary Festival – call for entries
|
|
The organisers of Encounters are calling for entries from South African and international filmmakers for 2009, the 11th edition of the festival, which takes place in Johannesburg 18 – 28 June 2009 and in Cape Town
2 – 12 July 2009.
ENCOUNTERS will show a selection of documentary films from around the world, with a particular focus on South African work. Filmmakers must guarantee, should their film be selected, that permission from the rights holder is secured for a minimum of six screenings at this Festival.
Deadline for submissions: 26 February 2009

Journal of African Cinemas call for papers
|
|
Journal of African Cinemas, a new pier-reviewed journal, is accepting submissions for Volume IV, scheduled for publication in 2011. The theme of the issue is “The Many Cinemas of Africa”. The Journal is looking for submissions for theoretical essays, reviews and comparative analysis regarding African cinema through its historical and contemporary legacies.
Deadline for submission is 30 June 2009. All submitted papers go through two reviewing processes: double-blind and participative peer reviews

National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) calling on funding proposals
|
|
The NLDTF has advertised qualifying funding criteria for the Arts, Film and Heritage sub-sector and is calling on applications for funding from organisations involved in film production and distribution.
Funding will be made available to organisations involved in:
- The production of feature films, short films and documentaries with a strong South African element
- Capacity development for training and script development

SACOD Forum postponed to February 2009
|
|
The board of the Southern Africa Communications for Development (SACOD) has announced the postponement of the 2008 Forum to 11 – 15 February 2009, to take place in the Magaliesberg. The new date is 2 weeks before the 40th FESPACO Film Festival in Ouagadougu, Burkina Faso.
All members are urged to advise SACOD in writing as to their expression of interest in participating in the Forum
