Over 550 delegates attended the second annual Film Indaba, hosted by the Gauteng Film Commission, last month (12 November 2008), making this a premier event in the audio visual sector. Terry Tselane, Chief Executive of the GFC, stressed in his opening address that continued co-operation and commitment between the industry and the GFC, as we work together to strengthen and grow this vial and vibrant sector in Gauteng, is absolutely vital.
The Beyond 2010 theme was explored in many diverse facets, with the overall focus on how can the industry leverage off and benefit from both the infrastructure being developed and the interest being shown in South Africa. What emerged loud and clear from this one-day conference was that in order to have a sustainable local industry and to be able to capitalise off upcoming opportunities, the industry needs to be more cohesive, to co-operate more and to present a business case on the industry to the Province and government in order to secure more investment and support, as well as commitment to making Gauteng not only a film friendly or conducive environment but also a highly successful industry base.
In this issue, we cover a number of the panel discussions, which proved to be interactive and very beneficial, as well as Tselane’s opening address, the keynote presentation on New Mexico’s experiences and measures taken to develop an indigenous filmmaking industry and globally competitive film centre, as well as a paper by panellist Professor Tomaselli that looks at the modern consumer, new age technology and what impact this will have on the traditional film industry.
