Mobile moviemaker Colbert Dube walked away with first prize in the Jozi Film Festival’s mobile phone film contest with his minimalist one-minute take on the city, Jozi LoveHate.
The competition, run by the Jozi Film Festival in partnership with online share trading company EasyEquities, challenged Jozi residents to share how they feel about their city through do-it-yourself mobile movie making.
Dube’s entry, featuring a poetic voice-over against subtly shifting music, plays effectively on the competition’s theme of “Jozi: Love/Hate” to establish its neat conclusion.
Announcing the winners on Friday, 9 September, the organisers added that they “could not ignore the incredible films” Jo_hustle_berg by Megan Mexiy Van Der Merwe and Crossing the divide by Ndudu Shandu
Dube took home R5 000, while Van der Merwe and Shandu each pocketed R1 000.
“Jozi is an awesome backdrop for this competition as it represents a brilliant mix of people in South Africa,” EasyEquities brand manager Carly Barnes said. “Thank you to all of you who took part – each film was special.”
Countdown on to hottest Jozi Film Fest yet
The countdown is on to what promises, judging from the scorching lineup, to be the hottest Jozi Film Fest yet.
It takes place from 15 to 18 September at The Bioscope in Maboneng and Cinema Nouveau in Rosebank, and on 16 and 17 September at the Eyethu Lifestyle Centre in Soweto.
