Throughout August, all social media platforms were abuzz with GFC Women’s month activities and hashtags. Trending on Twitter requires a hot socially issue or topic; most importantly, it is through an innovative yet collective effort that GFC was seen trending at the top of the trend-line. GFC YouTube and other social media numbers increased drastically. GFC, the brand, was celebrated and honoured in all socials, for developing and availing an online platform that supported women film creators through lectures, roundtable discussions and a film festival dedicated to only women.
South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. This historic march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom and society at large. Since that eventful day, women from all walks of life became equal partners in the struggle for a non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.
