In association with Gauteng Department of Education and the Department of Sport, Arts Culture and Recreation the Gauteng Film Commission, will be celebrating the 42nd Anniversary of the Youth uprising through showcasing local content whilst also running workshops concurrently. For the duration of the event we will host 8 film training institutions who will utilize the platform to showcase services they render to the film & TV industry.

 BACKGROUND

June is celebrated as Youth Month in South Africa, with a specific focus on 16 June, which is also known as Youth Day. Youth Month pays tribute to the school pupils who lost their lives during the 16 June 1976 uprising in Soweto. 2018 marks 4th Annual youth expo and the 41st anniversary of the Soweto uprisings. The Soweto uprising ended tragically, with hundreds of young people brutally killed. This tragedy became a rallying point that inspired a nation and its people to rise up against the brutal apartheid system.

The focus on film seeks to inspire and support aspirant filmmakers to create real change in their communities through film production and guidance to access funding for both production and bursaries. To increase high school learners’ entry in the film industry, the project will conduct careers in film and TV workshops for youth out of school, unemployed youth and high school learners. The concept of Audience Development has become more broadly defined during the past decade, and some of the main considerations are audience retention, new audiences, cultural diversity, social and rural inclusion. With the usage of non-traditional viewing spaces, the project will conduct audience development screenings at Black Eagle Hall.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To pioneer a generation of filmmakers, literature and films that will form the foundation of South African film development and production.
  • To pave the way for the telling of authentic, unadulterated South African stories in the film medium.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This initiative seeks to use of the audiovisual medium as an effective communication tool providing opportunities for audiences to consume local content. The projects will offer emerging filmmakers and learners the fundamentals of filmmaking and guidance of getting started in the industry. Various institutions are invited to offer “film as career workshops”, bursaries and information dissemination session though out the duration of the expo, to those who wish to pursue a career in filmmaking.
