The Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival is back, and the Gauteng Film Commission is proud to have partnered with the Constitution Hill to deliver this event. Basha Uhuru, Constitution Hill’s flagship arts festival is a celebration and expression of the artistic freedom of the youth of South Africa. Commemorating South Africa’s youth of 1976, the festival will run from the 28th till the 30th of June 2018, at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg.
The GFC will be hosting workshops and screening films during the festival, providing a platform that will facilitate the broad spectrum of artistic expression for young professionals in the creative industry. The festival, encompassing group art exhibition, film screenings, panel discussions and a music concert, attracted over 1500 youths last year and was well received by Johannesburg’s eclectic audiences.
The Basha Uhuru is a free event and the GFC would like to extend the invitation to the youth of Gauteng to come, network and experience the wide variety of arts the festival has to offer. This initiative aims to use the audio-visual medium as an effective communication tool providing opportunities for audiences to consume African, South African and film product giving new voices to Joburg through film creating platforms and to attract large numbers of aspiring filmmakers, script writers and actors etc. who wish to pursue a career in filmmaking. Also, to pioneer a generation of filmmakers, literature and films that will form the foundation of South African film development and production, by paving the way for the telling of authentic, unadulterated South African stories using the film medium.
The GFC will screen the following films, at the Women’s Jail on Thursday and Friday:
- 5 Fingers For Marseilles – Thursday, 28 June 7-9pm at the Women’s Jail
- The People versus Patriarchy – Friday, 29 June, 6- 8pm at the Women’s Jail
- Catching Feelings – Friday, 29 June 8.30-10pm, at the Women’s Jail
