The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) invites prominent film and television producers to apply for the planned Inward Investment Mission(IIM) to South Africa aimed at promoting co-productions in animated series, feature films, documentaries and television series. The IBM will also promote South Africa’s film industry landscape and showcase film content, infrastructure, talent and vast shooting locations to international producers. The trade mission is part of the dti’s objective to promote South Africa’s Film service offerings, attracting co-production opportunities in order to grow the sector.
An invitation to apply is extended to International Film Producers, Production and Broadcasting Houses, Animation Studios and Houses, Acquisition and Distribution companies who are:
- Experienced filmmakers who have a proven track record for developing and producing 3-5 theatrically released feature films, animation, television fiction and/or non-fiction.
- Sales and distribution houses that have acquired and sold more 3-5 theatrical feature films, television fiction and/or non-fiction, +5 short films and/or commercials in the past two years;
Closing date for applications: 25 May 2018
Selected countries: UK, Netherlands, Germany, Canada and USA
Cities to be visits: Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban
The deadline date for the submission of complete EMIA Missions application forms is 25 May 2018.
Assistance is provided to qualifying South African exporters to introduce South African products into foreign markets, in a cost effective manner. the dti will offer the following financial support to qualifying firms:
- Economy class return airfare to a maximum of R17,000.00 for BOE’s and SMME’s and 50% of the Economy class return airfare to a maximum of R8,500.00 for Other Sized firms
- Daily subsistence allowance of R3,000.00 per day
- Excess baggage allowance to a maximum of R2,000.00 per approved firm, for the transport of promotional material and samples
- Business to business meetings for participants

South Africa currently has nine official co-production agreements with leading production countries: Canada, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Netherlands. These co-production agreements offer international production partners an opportunity to leverage off South Africa’s abundant skills and talent during production plus the services offered in post-production facilities include VFX, Animation & Motion Graphics, DIT services, digital dailies and media management solutions, Editing Cutting Rooms, Online, Colour Grading, Sound Mixing and Editing Studios, DCP Theatrical Cinema Packaging, Mastering, Versioning & Deliveries.
The mission will afford approved companies the opportunity to participate during the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) 2018, acquire film content, meet potential partners for future film projects, and scout shooting locations for servicing films across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
