Word from the Chief Executive
We are pleased to announce that Kgomotso Matsunyane of T.O.M. Pictures has been awarded the 2008 Passing the Torch Women in Film award. The Award is aimed at identifying business women in the Province, and honouring them for their extraordinary efforts in making Gauteng a better place to work and live in through the medium of film.
In response to concerns about escalating location fees in Johannesburg, we update you on initiatives to promote a ‘film friendly’ culture in Gauteng. We also report on the activities of the Gauteng Film Partnership in supporting our efforts of making film ‘everyone’s business’ in the province.
We welcome back the grande dame of local festivals as the Out in Africa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival again waltzes into town.
This month we introduce a new feature to the newsletter as we welcome Newtown as our first location feature of the month. We also announce a unique partnership formed with the Newtown Management District aimed at promoting Newtown as a film friendly zone.
Our production update of the month is a new biopic on Amelia Earhart whose producers found the perfect location at the historic Rand Airport in Ekurhuleni.
As we celebrate Heritage Month in September we look at sound and film archives and the extraordinary work these organisations do to secure our film heritage for future generations.
Lastly, a reminder to diarise the second week of November when we will yet again be hosting the Gauteng Film Indaba!

BEE Ratings: Government to insist on B-BBEE Scorecards
|
|
From 1 September 2008, government will no longer be allowed to accept BEE Rating Documents that only reflect ownership and management-BEE Compliance.
By law, in future, you will have to provide government with a Broad-Based BEE Scorecard.
If your turnover is less than R5m per annum, or you are a new company, you qualify as an Exempted Micro-Enterprise (EME). But you must prove your EME Status with a B-BBEE Scorecard or Statement.
If your turnover is between R5m and R35 per annum, you are regarded as a Qualifying Small Enterprise (QSE) and you must comply with four of the seven B-BBEE Elements of the Codes. You must also provide proof of your status to government by submitting a B-BBEE Scorecard.

Urban Myth Club have already proved to be very sync friendly, with major US shows such as Ugly Betty and usage during the Rugby World Cup. You will also find album samplers at the site.

Lisa Thrasher – Producer Seminar

As part of the Out in Africa SA Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, award-winning Independent Producer, Lisa Thrasher will run a producers seminar on Wednesday, 10 September, 10h00 – 16h00, at the Goethe Institut in Parkwood. The producer of Itty Bitty Titty Committee, which will be screened at the festival, Thrasher spent many years practicing International Anti-Piracy Litigation and Trademark Prosecution for the Intellectual Property Department of Fox Group Legal. Currently she serves as the President of Film Production & Distribution for POWER UP (Professional Organization of Women in Entertainment Reaching UP), the non-profit film production company and educational organization, where her responsibilities include all aspects of film development, production and distribution.
