Message from the Chief Executive
The 2008 Film Indaba was our highlight of November, with over 500 delegates coming together in Sandton for jam-packed discussions on topics impacting our sector, from 2010 to locations, studios, financing, distribution, to talent development and transformation. Our Film Indaba Special provides a detailed report back on an event that is fast becoming the industry’s most anticipated idea exchange of the year. We’re always open to receive feedback and look forward to your ongoing input on how we can make this initiative of optimum value for the industry.
We also update you on highlights of the 2008 Commercial Producers Industry Survey 2008, carried out by the Commercial Producers Association with the support of the Gauteng and Cape Film Commissions. The survey confirms the growing importance of commercials to the Gauteng economy and provides our sector with much needed business intelligence.
Our production update this month covers 2 new TV series, both Filmed in Gauteng, further highlighting how our province is undoubtedly the country’s leading location for TV productions.
It’s exciting to see how local filmmakers are starting to co-operate and mobilise for a growing local film sector. We cover one such initiative by Inspired Minority Picture to develop a slate of 10 feature films, utilising young ambitious talent, recently work-shopped in Newtown.
The location feature of the month looks at traditional architecture and cultural villages, while our festival calendar includes the Soweto Arts Festival, with film workshops by two well-known talents, Vincent Moloi and Norman Maake.
When you read this, we will just have taken eJozi to eKapa, hosting a session in the Mother City and meeting with Cape-based producers to discuss locations, production support and much more.
We also remind you of the Sithengi AGM taking place on the 6th of December. Also, don’t forget the IPO and SASFED will host a workshop in December, which will inform the industry of initiatives underway to address intellectual property rights in relation to the broadcasters.

Over 550 delegates attended the second annual Film Indaba, hosted by the Gauteng Film Commission, last month (12 November 2008), making this a premier event in the audio visual sector. Jerusalema to receive Black Bafta Award

Jerusalema is to receive an honorary award for Achievement in African Film Production at this year’s Screen Nation Film and Television Awards in London in early December.
The Screen Nation Film & TV Awards is uniquely the only annual international celebration of achievement within urban world cinema and TV in the UK. Celebrating the cascade of achievements that have helped enrich world and UK cinema & TV with cultural diversity, the Awards combines the glamour of international movie stars alongside British talent and has been dubbed by the media as the‘Black Bafta’s’.
