On 26 June 2025, the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) supported the premiere of We the People: A Family Portrait, a film by filmmakers Keabetswe Mogatus and Douglas Sekete. Held at the Kliptown Youth Program Centre, the screening marked the 70th anniversary of the Freedom Charter’s adoption in the very same community.

Shot entirely in Kliptown, the film is a visual tribute to South Africa and its people, using dance and poetic imagery to reflect on the Charter’s themes of justice, freedom, and collective hope. The event featured strong community engagement, opening with the national anthem and closing with children creating their own “Freedom Charters,” imagining the laws they would enact.

The GF’s support aligns with its mission to uplift township-based storytelling and promote inclusive participation in the province’s film sector.

Speaking to Newsflash, Mogatusi said, “We plan to host public screenings of this film across Gauteng in the coming months, continuing to spark dialogue and pride in communities throughout the province.”
