“I want to see the film sector in the region so powerful that almost every producer wants to shoot their movies in the region,” Thabang Molibeli-Chochoe.

SHARPEVILLE – A new trend aimed at popularising locally produced movies is set to hit the streets of Sharpeville.

Dozens of movie lovers can now grace the tennis court side of George Thabe Stadium in Sharpeville every Saturday and Sunday to enjoy different films of their choice.

From watching inside their vehicles to opening vehicle boots or setting up picnics, couples and families can now binge.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Thabang Molibeli-Chochoe the man behind the idea explains his concept.

“The Vaal movie nights bring the movie experience under the sky with a tune from your car radio system you get to enjoy a movie as a romantic couple or as a family in the comfort of your car. This year the Vaal movie nights are supported by the Gauteng Film Commission, a commission set up to improve local filmmaking in Gauteng and create necessary jobs in the sector,” he said.

Molibeli-Chochoe said, “The idea aims at promoting local filmmakers and directors by showcasing their work on platforms such as Vaal Movie Nights.”

As a way of drawing more filmmakers, Molibeli-Chochoe said he hopes the initiative will create a burning desire for upcoming or aspiring filmmakers.

“I want to see the film sector in the region so powerful that almost every producer wants to shoot their movies in the region and showcase them first here as the movie screening would be making such a noise that no filmmaker will not want his film to be screened in Sharpeville,” he said.

“I hope to make this a tourism event as well getting people from all walks of life and from other provinces as well. The Vaal movie night plans to be one of the biggest screening venues in the theatre 80s thus is a nostalgic yet great experience to watch a movie,” said Molibeli-Chochoe.
