The Business Model Canvas (BMC) is an open source tool for creative content producers and has been used all over the world.

The BMC provides a single easy-to-use visual tool allowing participants to quickly map their productions and/or businesses, assess viability and re-imagine their business model. The workshops’ participatory approach creates an empowering and interactive working environment that gives participants a tangible blueprint for current and future projects and how to increase their revenue.

The Business Model Canvas (BMC) is the perfect tool for beginner and intermediate producers and production companies who need to frame their concepts within a solid business framework. In South Africa, many creative people entering the field of video production and filmmaking, who have not had business training, now need to understand how to plan for their businesses and for individual projects.

The workshop is a direct result of the hugely successful BMC Bootcamp at the 2015 Durban Filmmart, which was initiated by the Documentary Filmmakers Association and supported by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), the Canadian Film Center (Media Lab) and the Gauteng Film Commission.

Three of the trained facilitators will be holding an open demonstration of the tool and its uses. Their approach will be tailored to the film industry and comes out of a well-evolved methodology developed by the Canadian CFC Media Lab for creative producers and content-based businesses.

These workshops will prove pivotal in helping creatives think beyond content and focus on their business model. This will be vital for creating sustainable job opportunities for the thousands of people who work in the creative industries. The Gauteng Film Commission is pleased to support this initiative.
